I was perplexed when asked to write an article about hunting gear and gadgets from the female perspective. We hunt with the same
stuff the guys do. Why would our gadgets be any different because of our gender? And as far as clothes go, I am 5’10”, so men’s
clothes fit pretty well and are readily available. Truthfully, they fit better than women’s camouflage clothing because the women’s lines
seldom fit in the length. It appears that most women’s clothing manufacturers think that ALL women are short in stature.
My friend Patt Dorsey, who is also 5’10”, agreed. She is able to use and contend with men's gear because it is easier to find and often
more affordable. However, she found that taking the time to find gear that truly fit made a world of difference for her. For instance, she
recently purchased an Osprey pack from Backcountry Experience,
a retail store in her area. The retailer took the time to take several measurements and
found a pack that truly fit her. She said it has really made a difference and she hikes
better and farther because her back and shoulders don't tire so fast.

As far as other gadgets go, I think that most women go in the woods with the same basic things the
men do. Some of which may include; a pocket knife, Leatherman’s tool, hand and toe warmers, a LED
headlamp to keep your hands free, safety harness, cell phone, compass, some type of cover scent and
chap stick. Depending on what type of game you are pursuing, different game calls and decoys if
appropriate. Generally we don’t overdo it with gadgets, but pick our favorites and limit what we carry into
the woods.
Comfort and simplicity is the name of the game. That; and being in the right place at the right time.
Now, if I could just remember where I put all that stuff, but that’s a different story .......

Along those lines, a friend recently introduced me to the clothing line from SHE Safari. I must admit I was skeptical at
first. I thought, here we go again; more clothes that will be too short. (or heaven forbid, come with pink trim or accents
- what is THAT all about?) But I was pleasantly surprised when I found out that SHE Safari pants came unhemmed
with a 36” inseam. Finally! Plus they are practical and made for different types of hunting trips or outdoor excursions.
I love the fit and must say it just feels better to hunt in clothes that fit and look good. SHE Outdoor Apparel is unique in
that their clothing lines are designed by women, for women, and field proven by an elite team of professional
outdoorswomen. For those women that have trouble staying warm in cold weather, they recently came out with the
ultimate cold weather gear which they call the C4 System. It is warm, waterproof, wind resistant and whisper quiet. It
definitely helps you to be comfortable while in the woods.
And speaking of comfort; there is nothing worse than the following scenario. You are setting up perfectly on that big
gobbler that you have been trying to figure out for weeks. Finally the stars seem to line up for you and you get him
coming your way. You are trying not to move, but an army of mosquitoes are attacking your face in their best effort to
keep you from attaining your goal. Torture! Thank goodness for ThermaCELL. I never go hunting without it. For
those not familiar with ThermaCELL, it is a mosquito repellent that is compact, portable, doesn’t contain Deet, and is
silent and odor free. It is perfect for hunting turkeys in the South Alabama swamps on those hot spring mornings or
deer hunting on those hot afternoons during early archery season. It makes hunting much more enjoyable and you
don’t have to put harmful chemicals on your body.
